Frequently Asked Questions

Why stay at Tonglen Lake Lodge in Denali instead of a Denali Hotel?

Tonglen Lake is a unique oasis in the Denali where our guests can experience the area without the hustle and bustle of a lot of visitors.  We are a small property that is well suited to independent travelers and families that want some space to rest and relax in between their excursions.

What is the best option for travel to and around Tonglen Lake Lodge?

Because transportation services are minimal in the Denali area, we HIGHLY recommend that you organize your own form of transportation prior to arrival. Many of our guests find that a great option is to rent a car in either Fairbanks (2hrs) or Anchorage (5hrs) and make the scenic drive into the area.  Renting a car proves to be the best way for our guests to experience Denali to the fullest by giving them the freedom to adventure at their own pace.  Alternatively, if you are planning to arrive via train, we recommend that you look into a hiring a private touring company like Traverse Alaska who can provide local guides and transportation.

How far in advance of my stay should I book tours and activities?

The most important activity to book in advance is your guided trip into the Park via a bus tour or Park Service Transit bus. You can choose to book other tours and activities closer to your arrival date or even after you arrive, depending upon your time and flexibility. We are happy to book tours and excursions for you and/or direct you to our top recommendations in the area.

Does Tonglen Lake provide transportation to and from the Alaska Railroad Depot?

Tonglen Lake Lodge does not provide transportation and unfortunately, the area public transportation is nearly non-existent. If you do not have your own rental car, we highly recommend Traverse Alaska Guides for both your transportation and guided activities.
