Ever dream of writing a film? Do you have a story that you think would make a great movie? A great film starts with a great blueprint - the screenplay. In this one-day intensive screenwriting workshop you will learn about the craft of writing for film, how to tell a visual story in words, how to avoid common mistakes, and how to navigate the culture of the film industry. In the morning session you’ll learn about story structure, creating dynamic characters, writing believable dialogue and more. In the afternoon we’ll write a short screenplay! You’ll learn about film script form and vocabulary, creating scenes and writing dynamic action. You’ll also learn about the most common mistakes new screenwriters make and how to avoid them.

Instructor: Leonard Kamerling
Len Kamerling is Curator of Film at the UA Museum of the North and Professor of English at UAF. He has taught screenwriting in the UAF Graduate Creative Writing Program for over fifteen years. Len has made more than a dozen award winning films about Alaska Native cultures and indigenous issues. His film, Uksuum Cauyai: The Drums of Winter, was named to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2006. Throughout his career, he has been primarily concerned with issues of cultural representation in film and the role that documentaries can play in eliminating stereotypes and in credibly translating one culture to the other.
